LAIRA , situated in Devon, England, is a modern area with a rich history. Formerly known as Lare (1591), Lary Pointe (1638), the Leerie (1643), and the Lairy (1802), the name originally referred to the part of the River Plym estuary extending from the Cattewater up to Marsh Mills in Plymouth. The name's origins may stem from a Brythonic word akin to the Welsh "llaeru," meaning 'to ebb.'
Today, Laira encompasses the vicinity of the Laira Traction Maintenance Depot in Plymouth. Much of the residential housing in this area dates back to around 1900 and was constructed for depot employees. Old Laira Road features a memorial plaque commemorating those from Laira who lost their lives in the Great War. The former Police/Fire Station on Old Laira Road has been repurposed as a library. Laira Green Primary School and a disused United Reformed Church also occupy the area.
In the early 19th century, significant changes occurred in Laira's landscape. Old Laira Road, once the northern shore of Lipson Lake (or Bay), was transformed through reclamation efforts. An embankment constructed in 1802 along the western shore of the Laira, together with drainage efforts, reclaimed land from the estuary. This reclaimed land, now occupied by the railway depot and Lipson Co-operative Academy, was formerly part of Tothill Bay. The construction of a new road along this embankment provided a direct route from Laira Green to Prince Rock, replacing the older, more challenging path via Old Laira Road and Lipson. Despite being a toll road until 1924, this new route quickly became the primary highway into Plymouth from Plympton, Exeter, and beyond.
PLYMOUTH , Britain's Ocean City, is one of Europe's most vibrant waterfront cities. Located by a stunning waterfront and harbour, Plymouth is the perfect place to buy property.
